Loma Linda Transplant Institute has an active and expanding kidney transplant program, performing over 120 kidney transplants per year. This gives our Nephrology fellows a great opportunity to gain skills managing all aspect of kidney transplant including pre-transplant evaluation, post kidney transplant care, managing immunosuppression and donor evaluations. Fellows have the opportunity to do transplant rotations, attending multidisciplinary rounds with transplant surgeons and pharmacists. Each fellow spends three months in transplant clinics during the first year (immediately after coming off of a one month acute transplant service). Additionally fellows are involved in evaluating patients during week-end or overnight call. Fellows will also perform ultrasound guided transplant kidney biopsies.
LLUMC has a well staffed histocompatability lab for tissue typing, cross matching, determining preformed antibodies, etc. allowing the fellows to be exposed to these aspects of transplantation; and if desired, a fellow may take an elective in the laboratory.
