Loma Linda University Medical Center
Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) and Children's Hospital (LLUCH) is a 797-bed tertiary care facility, and the only Level I trauma center serving an area roughly equal to 25 percent of the State of California. The emergency department evaluates more than 60,000 patients a year. Of the patients evaluated forty percent are children and are seen in the newly expanded pediatric emergency department, completed July 2002. The acuity of both pediatric and adult patients is high. Twenty four percent of patients are admitted and twenty six percent of admitted patients are admitted to an ICU. As a tertiary care facility, LLUMC commonly treats patients with unusual or complicated medical conditions. We have one of the largest pediatric intensive care units in the western United States, an active transplant center, and cutting edge cancer center.
Riverside County Regional Medical Center
Riverside County Regional Medical Center (RCRMC) evaluates almost 90,000 patients each year in its emergency department. The hospital is a Level II trauma center and is the largest trauma center in Riverside County. The hospital is newly constructed, state of the art, and opened its doors in 1998. Emergency medicine residents treat the diversity of illnesses typical of an indigent population. Emergencies relating to complications of poorly controlled diseases such as diabetes, street drug abuse, and psychiatric illnesses are commonly seen. As RCRMC is the designated county hospital, residents are exposed to a significant amount of both blunt and penetrating trauma.
