The Diabetes Treatment Center (DTC) is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for providing up-to-date and accurate patient self-management education to persons with diabetes. Our team has a unique service-oriented approach as we interact with patients. It is our goal for persons with diabetes to return to living full and active lifestyles. To us, success means changed lives.

Types of Diabetes

There are 4 different types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 - Only 5-10% of the people who have diabetes have type 1 diabetes,
  • Type 2 - Ninety to ninety-five percent of the people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes,
  • Gestational diabetes (GDM)- GMD appears while a woman is pregnant,
  • and other types of diabetes that can be caused by medications or damage to the pancreas.

Causes, Risks and Symptoms

Several factors can cause diabetes:

  • Heredity
  • Age
  • Lifestyle
  • Activity
  • Sex
  • Obesity
  • Inactivity
  • Diet
  • Stress
  • Other health problems

Nutrition

Nutrition is most important for people who have diabetes. Eating regular foods, the right food combinations, the right amounts and at the right time are critical to controlling diabetes. Setting goals to control your diabetes will improve your health and control diabetes.
