Many insurance plans do provide coverage for diabetes education.
If you have an HMO insurance plan, physician referral and insurance authorization are required.
If you have a Medicare PPO or fee-for-service plan, only a physician referral is required.
If you have Medicare and have never received diabetes education, ten hours of education in the first year are covered. An annual refresher course of up to two hours of group education is covered.
Coverage for diabetes supplies
The state of California requires that all non-military insurance plans provide diabetes self-management supplies. Military insurance plans and institution self-administered plans are exempt from this law.
