Having a Baby

Delivering a baby is one of the most elating, yet stressful times in a woman's life. To make this process as safe, pleasant and stress-free as possible, the Perinatal Institute’s Total Care Birth Center (TCBC) at the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital provides women with compassionate, top-of-the-line care before, during and after the delivery process.

TCBC provides competent and safe care to childbearing women and their newborns. This includes all pregnant women who need care for their pregnancy or care for a condition that may have an impact on their pregnancy, delivery or postpartum period. It also includes care for their newborns, not requiring intensive care.

Staffing is provided by registered nurses in a total care nursing system to ensure the provision for quality of care. A charge nurse or shift coordinator is designated for each shift and unit. Our RN staff is assisted by unit secretaries and perinatal technicians.

Our goal at TCBC is to deliver optimal care to infants and their mothers in accordance with the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative. TCBC Hours of Operation are 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Caring for Women & Infants after Delivery
Having a baby is just the first step in the journey of childrearing. Immediately after an infant is born, mothers and families have a whole new set of issues and challenges ahead of them. Continuing to provide holistic, compassionate care, the experienced staff at the Total Care Birth Center provides:

  • Education classes on breastfeeding, CPR on infants, infant massage, childrearing and promoting healthy sibling relationships
  • Nutritional guidance via dieticians and nutritionists who help mothers develop and follow realistic diet plans appropriate for breastfeeding and, eventually, healthy weight loss
  • Outpatient medical attention to monitor mothers' and newborns' health in the months after delivery
  • Therapy for women dealing with marriage challenges, post-partum depression, unexpected pregnancy outcomes or other emotional issues that develop following delivery
